I will be getting more specifics on the cam shortly as I am getting ready to tear into the top end. I WILL be beefing up the cam if I am going through this much work. My fuel pump is 80gph. I AM on the look out for a reasonably priced Holley double pumper. Right now I am running an Edelbrock 600 cfm 4bbl.
All of that stuff still does not explain the dead miss on cylinder 8 but I guess I will figure out the problem eventually because I will just keep digging deeper until I find the cause. Right now, I am hoping it's just a wiped out cam lobe so I can stop digging!!! LOL

Barbara:
Before you pull the cam....
I highly recommend doing the compression test 1st...
Not only number 8 but all of them to get a base line on just what kind of compression there is...

This will also help with making a new cam decision for which one will work best for your application.

Id hate to think..it will turn out to be a bent valve at #8 hence the misfire.

Then your looking at a valve job... at which time... I would suggest since its a 70's motor.... I would look into replacing them with a set of Camel Hump heads... (maybe a little hard to find but so worth it) The valves in them are 202/194's Its old school but youll be pleasantly surprised with the results with them.

I'm really curious as to what the actual compression is in all the cylinders.

I would also recommend a set of 1.5 roller rockers..
There not cheap... But... Youll have less chance of "Floating" (Over revving damage) the motor at top end speeds/rpms.
This style of head may also increase the compression. Mostly due to the chamber design of them.

Hmmm.. Ok. I was just trying to save steps by not closing it all back up and then having to open it again and remove the balancer, etc. But I can see your point!!

Well Zippy02 reminded me that I had not updated my thread. Thanks Greg.
This could end up being a novel!!! LOL I will add pics after I get them off my phone.
So I began the systematic tear-down of my engine.
Negative terminal of battery disconnected
Valve covers removed
rocker arms loosened and pushrods removed and kept in order in case they were going to be reused (did not know yet)
Carburetor removed and cleaned
alternator removed (FINALLY found my numbers for my engine. I DO NOT have a 350sbc. I have a 327sbc from a 65 Vette h/p!!!)
electric fan disconnected and removed with radiator after draining.
fuel pump removed
water pump removed and painted
removed power steering pump and looped lines (deleted power steering and removed about 8 lbs of weight)
marked all plug wires and disconnected from distributor along with all the other wiring to/from distributor
marked distributor and rotor position
removed distributor
removed intake manifold carefully so I did not drop a bunch of dirt/junk down into the valley. Cleaned and painted.
removed lifters and placed in marked bags in case they were reused
removed pulley, then that horrible harmonic balancer (worse part of the entire job)
opened timing chain cover to find the a horribly loose timing chain that had been beating on the cover.
So I remove the bolts for the cam gear and slide that off as well as the chain
then the crank gear was removed (second worse part of the job)
Crank gear was removed as I was replacing old timing assembly with a double roller timing assembly
after removal of crank gear I carefully removed the cam
had two lobes at the 8th cylinder that were worn more than all the rest but not real stupid looking stuff.
Took cam to be profiled.
Purchased new cam from local performance engine builder based on all the information I gave them.
Put everything back together in reverse order.
Negative battery cable reconnected.
Set timing then broke in the new cam and lifters as recommended.
When it fired up I about passed out. I DID IT!!!!!
The miss is GONE!!!! BUT my times are not better at the track (they are worse) and everything is pointing to the cam that the "professional" engine builder recommended for my setup. Will not buy so much as a bolt from these people EVER again!!!
But the miss is gone. Compression is between 148-150 on all cylinders!!! I am slower but dead on consistent.
So my quest for the proper cam will commence!!!
Sorry it took me so long to update this thread. I thought I had already done it.
