Default interior lites problem!!!

Actually the interior lights are working good!!!.....TOO GOOD.... Can't get them to stay off no matter what I try.
First of all it'smy father-in-laws2001 with no problems until this. Got tired of going over to give him a jump every other day or so, so I exchanged cars with him to take it home and put a charger on the battery (thats about 8 months old).
My wife actually was driving the car while I shot-gunned and noticed that the footwell lites, dome lite, and map lites were on and nothing that my wife could do to the lite switch would make them stay off. They would go off and stay off for about 5+ or - seconds and then turn back on. We've owned a 2000 MC (now my daughters car) and currently have a 2005 (I consider it my wifes car since I never drive it) so my wife should know how to get the lites to work. Finally removed two fuses on the passenger side and got the interior lites out and I think the battery will now hold a charge.
Everything else seems to be working, headlites and turn signals, rear brakes lites and turn signals, instrument cluster and radio, (never tried the heater). And after shutdown the headlites even turn off after a half minute or so.
Anyone else heard off such a predicament and if so whats to be done?????
Thanks for readiing!!

i had a similar problem in a junker ford escort i owned when i was 16. ended up being the switch in the door jam that turns the lights on when you open the door had broke completely off (leaving the lights on) might be something to check out.

Hi `Billy, Sorry that you are having a Mystery Prob with your
Monte Carlo. : (
Check the manually operated interior light control switch that is associated with the headlamp switch (usually its the extreme position of the rotary variable intensity dash lighting control switch) might be what is keeping your interior lights "on" all the time. So try adjusting the dash lamp intensity switch to both ends of its range of movement to see if that might be the cause. Your lighting switch could be wearing out ?That may be all that is the problem.. Perhaps there is a short in the fuse box that is causing the problem, or the fuse is not the right size dimensionally. Also the relay switch's on your doors
(like member Couch stated in his post),
they also can stick, or go bad.
Good Luck in finding the Electrical Gremlin : )

Sounds like a bad switch to me. BUT I'm told that the switch only tells the body control module (BCM) what to do, like turn the lights on and off. Not sure about interior lights tho, but I know that's the way headlight are.
Could be a bad connection somewhere, also.

i would see if they can test the bcm and or the switch on this.
from what your saying is they are working correctly when they shut off for a small amount of time but then are being turned on again. SO this is where ya need to figure out wha tthe cause of this is . i would test the switch and the bcm. as i belive those and the remote arethings that cover the controll of this function.

Other thing is sounds funny take the remote apart and make sure it is not shorting out in there causeing it to keep sending signal to th car. but i would think tha tthe locks would be gong nuts also.

Finalizing the Topic:
Called dad and he asked me to take the car in to dealer which I did on monday. Got a call on tuesday saying to pick it up, price would be in $40.00 range. After arriving found when they replaced the fuses they could find nothing wrong and the service person spent about 20 minutes or so showing my wife how everything worked - and it did.
Paid and about halfway to dads condo my wife honked, got my attention and told me the lites were on again. Turned around and this time they put a scope on the car ??? and came back saying that the module (which I don't know ) was completely shorted out (lites would work or not work at random times). This took about a hour to replace and dads checking accout is about another $350.00 lighter. But he seems to be happy to get his car back,my wife is satisfied so I'm happy just knowing Iwon't be getting a "I need a jump" call again.
Keeping fingers crossed it dosen't happen again!!!
I'm getting too old for this !!!.............Thanks to everyone!!!
