Innova sucks? Judge for yourself...
So, as we all know, there aren't many scanners out there that can access 1995 OBD1 Montes and other cars.
Can't see live data, and erasing codes usually only works when disconnecting the ECM.
I had an old Innova 3140 which was able to read the dtc's and connect to the computer. Lately came across
a 5160RS at a decent price, My OBD1 GM Innova cables from the 3140 would hook right up, and to my
surprise it won't connect to the Monte. It asks you to enter the 8th digit of the vin and the 4th one. These can
be picked from the list inside the 5160 menu. So the year, list are a match with my car. But it won't connect!
The database from the 5160 should also be updated, but their update tool says no update available.
So I contacted their customer support, and hold on to your seat, they claim they do not have a scanner that would
connect to a Monte! Their scanners would only support a 95 Caprice! What? So why are their a list of vin digits to chose from?
No answer from them. And there is an update available to scan newer cars, and for that I would have to ship the scanner to them!
So when chinese Tech 2 knockoffs have better customer service and gives you more features, I'd say there is something wrong.
I rather support american companies, but this i feel is a joke.

I cannot speak to those, but I had access to an old OTC scanner years ago that worked with my 1994 Grand Am. And a old Snap-On scanner that worked with my 1994 Grand Am as well and up to about a 2001 or 2002 GM vehicle (as long as you had the right cartridges and the "keys" for it). I believe those are fairly cheap in the used eBay market these days.
