Default How to remove rear seat back?

I need to take out the rear seat backs on my 2003 SS. I already removed the seat bottom by snapping it out of the tabs that hold it in and pulling forward from under the hooks. Now I have a 2001 shop manual that shows 2 bolts at the bottom holding in the upper seats, but I cannot find these bolts on my car. I had to pull out the padded piece between the bottom cushion and top seat backs that has plastic retainers holding it into holes in the floor. But I have run my fingers all along the bottom of the seat and cannot find the bolts that are supposed to hold the bottom of the seat back in place. I removed the 4 upper bolts near the seat lock and the top is free but the bottom is still permanently attached. I still cannot remove my carpet from the trunk to get to the fuel pump as it is tucked under the seat and I can't figure what is holding it in...

I just changed out some seats in my Car and reinstalled some leather ones and they were different than what I took them out of some of them must have different modifications as they go along. There should be 2 or 3 fender washer style nuts on the rear wall of the back seat that could hold them in place at least that's what I dealt with. It was a pain to say the least. Mine was a 5th gen but there are similar things to them.

Thanks #3! I did figure it out, the 2001 GM manual does not work for the 2003 seats that's for sure. I had to use a 18mm socket and take off the two nuts that hold the seatbelts in the middle of the floor, and 3 more 18mm - 1 nut and two long bolts that go through the unpainted metal piece on the floor below the bottom of the seat backs, this piece is what the hinge is welded to that allows the seats to fold, and it does not even show that piece in the 2001 manual. After I pulled those out it lifted out easily. So I took off the cover to get to the fuel pump. For some reason it looks like the sending unit is about an inch too far forward to pull straight up and out of the hole in the floor... hopefully GM designed the hole in the right place!

Ok glad it worked out. I was a bit surprised in the inconsistency when I change the rear seat in mine.

I have a question since you already have your seats out and everything,i plan to bolt some bucket seats down in the back,do you know if il have enough clearance between the floor and the gas tank? I really don't want to drill into the tank,i plan to drill a hole and thread it then use about an inch to a 1 and a half bolt if that wont hit the tank

Hi KingWorld, the gas tank is under the trunk floor, which is higher than the floor so I am fairly positive that the gas tank will not be hit if you drill holes through the floor in the back seat area. The gas tank would be behind the rear seat bottom if you attach it to the floor.
Just be careful where the fuel and brake lines are on the drivers side, if your seat track is over them I would not drill through the floor without measuring where those are first.
