Default How low does the oil have to get...

...for the Low Oil light to come on?

Does anyone know? I posted a thread a while back about the dealership trying to make my pay for gaskets for an oil leak when I have the 100,000 mile power train warranty.

Anyway, at that time I told them I was concerned that the low oil light only flashed on for a couple seconds when I turned the car off. I was ready to leave on a 300 mile or so trip on Saturday and I had a feeling...so I checked the oil and it was low. I had to put a quart in and it still wasn't covering all 4 holes on the dipstick.

Shouldn't my light have come on to tell me this, probably a LONG time ago?

Anyone have any experience with this?

Needless to say I'll be taking it back to ask them why it is either still leaking, or is burning oil; and why the light doesn't come on.

Thanks!

they probably bypassed the light, best bet is to drain the oil and turn on the ignition and if it does not come on then the sensor is bad.

Matter of fact have them do it. theory is if it has no oil then the light should be on.

IDK, you said you put in a quart, and all 4 holes still were not covered...So how many were covered? sounds like you were only just over 1 quart low on oil. The "idiot" lights usually don't come on until you are so low on oil your engine's about to fry itself. Why IDK the answer, IMO they should come on if your 1 quart or more low, but they don't.

Now, What year/ how many miles is on your Monte? It does not seem right that you are using that much oil...my 3.5 06 with 79,500 does not burn ANY oil. So either you still have gasket issues that the dealer did not fix, or your burning excessive amounts of oil.

You say it's a laser blue metallic with silver... I'm going to guess you are driving an 05 SS.

The low oil light I believe comes on when you are about 2 quarts low, because the dipstick can tell you 1 quart and you should check that about once a week (every other week minimum)

i honestly dont trust the car's sensor sometimes cause those go bad too.. i would manually check my engine oil. i recently replaced my coolant level sensor 2 weeks ago cause it would say low coolant level and my coolant would be tipped off to the radiator cap. certain **** u just gotta check for urself

Thanks for the info guys!

It is an 05 Supercharged SS.

I don't know about the oil light but I bet they never checked it. The one time I saw it on was only for about 3 seconds when I shut the car off. I turned it back on and no light. I was indeed low.

Then they fixed valve cover gaskets and oil cooler lines.

Now it's either still leaking, or burning. I'm going to take it in this weekend.

I also hear this ticking sound, which someone heard on my 96 Grand Prix and thought it might be lifters. Could this and oil leak/burn be related?

If its burning oil, do you think this woudl be covered by the power train warranty?

Thanks!

This is the same gasket that is linked to going bad for years in GM 3x00s due to dex-cool?
