I have 04 monte carlo the temp gauge reads hot (pegged out) but it does not steam or overfllow or leak at all. It all so loses power as i drive it. and it doesnt happen all the time. It cut off for the first today and the check engine light is on now. Anyone have any idea what the problem might be???????

Hi Terry & Welcome to the Monte Carlo Family...
Sorry to read about your problem...It could be many things, but I would check the thermostat as one possible cause..
Will it still run ? Can you take it to a Part store to get your check engine code read ?
When was the last time you serviced your cooling system ?
Has your system ever been flushed ?
YOU SHOULD NOT DRIVE IT WHEN HOT 4-Sure...
Check back to see what our expert member's post on your problem...Wish you Good luck & a Cool running Monte

Step #1 - With the car cool, open the radiator cap, ensure it's full.
Step #2 - You have a check engine light, find the code and report back.
Items to consider for running hot could be low coolant, air in the line and a T-Stat stuck closed.
I had a vehicle randomly lose power before. It turned out to be corroded connections on the starter. Check the battery and the starter connections, ensure they are not corroded.

x2 also after you check the fluid and replace the thermostat i would see if the fans come on if they dont it could be the temp sensor fooling the fans if they come on the fans are fine and might be a water pump or some thing more serius.
