Default Gas gauge off/not working.

when i got my 83 ss i noticed the fuel gauge was showing almost empty so i filled up and the gauge didnt go up. When I was drving one day i noticed it looked like it was a little over half and i had been driveing it for about a week after that first fillup so i thought thats about where it should have been, then like the next day it was like between 1/4 and 1/2. Then after a while it looked empty again. I put like 7 gals in and it was full again, but the gauge stayed at empty. My moms sebring acted a little like this once and she put stp fuel systems cleaner in it and it seemed to cleaned the mechinizum in the tank beacuse it works much better now. I put some gumout in it but havent noticed anything yet (just put it in yesterday). Is there a common problem the monte has or is it just mine. I know sometimes you can have problems with the float. Kinda acts like the float has a hole in it and just lets the gas in then floats around where ever it wants to its uselly on empty though, idk what do you guys think?

ok here ya go,
First of all those years of the montes were common on loseing the gas guage.
crawl under the rear end of the car and find the wires for the gas sending unit. then proceed to find the ground wire for it and clean the connection real good. and make sure you do both the connection and the body. ALSO if you can find a diffrent place tha tyou can hook it up that is better then one screw threw the body. get it really secure.

IF that dont work
The only other thing on the out side of the car it could be is this.
take the sending unit out of the tank and then replace it. there is not really a hit or miss with them they work or not.

if this is not the issue
then check the guage in the inside of the car. if you put a ground wire on it on one pole or the other it should eathier read ful of empty. if you ground the other it will read it the other way.

mine used ot read full till i was around 3/4 tank then it would loat till i was about 1/8th a tank and it would read acurate at that point and quit bouncing around. and i would fill it to do the same thing all over again.
the nice part is these guages are pretty much one or the other so if it is bad you cna go to thebone yard and find a new one. they dont go bad to offten in the daxh it is normally at the tank end as it is in the weather and causes it to carode.

ok ill have to just mess with it some, it read full like it should ealier today lol. tomorrow it will probaly be empty lol and as you probaly know sence you have replied in both of my threads that neither the odometer/speedometer or the gas gauge work properly, lol so i just kinda guess and fill it back up once and a while.
