Default Fuel pump losing prime?

I have a 2000 Monte Carlo that takes a lot of cranking to start. If it sits for an hour or so, you have to crank it and pump the gas pedal to get it to start. I believe the fuel pump is losing its prime. If that's the problem, do I need to replace the pump or is there an easier fix? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!....scott

First, pumping the gas on these cars is not like an old carb-ed vehicle. Until the car is started, pumping the gas does nothing.

First think I am wondering is if you have any type of fuel leak. Check under the car for smells of gas and signs of wetness. If so, it may be a very slow leak resulting in the lines being dry of fuel, hence why it cranks a long time before it starts.

If you can get your hands on a fuel pressure tester, you can check the PSI at the fuel rail. See if it's right.

Also, check for signs of any vacuum leaks. A big enough leak can cause some starting problems.

How do the car run once it's started?

Thanks very much for your suggestions. I did replace the fuel filter last year. I'll check and see if there may be a small leak in that area.

After the car starts, it runs well. Thank you again!......scott
