Dies while Idling
Need help!
I have a 2001 Monte SS, car idles rough, white smoke and dies while idling during cold weather. I have replaced the MAF Sensor, MAP Sensor and Throttle Position Sensor. Issue does not seem to have healed.
This is just one of the issues that I am having, will see if anyone has any suggestions with this one before I ask the next question.
Any ideas or help will be greatly appreciated.
My apologies if this is a duplicate thread/question.

Sorry about the trouble you are having with your Monte. I do not have the answer to your question but there are many people here who are a wealth of knowledge.

White smoke out the exhaust is typically a sign of coolant being burned in the cylinders. Ont he 3800, this can happen by 4 different causes I can think of:
- Head gasket failure
- Throttle body gasket failure
- Upper Intake (UIM) gasket failure
- Upper Intake failure (where the EGR stove pipe comes up between two coolant passages)
(some may add lower intake, but I believe typically when that fails coolant gets into the oil OR out of the engine)
Best first step, get a radiator pressure tester from the local auto part's store loan-a-tool. Pressurize the system then look/listen for signs of a coolant problem to help narrow it down.
Coolant getting into the system can cause rough idling. If you get too much in the system, the engine stalls. If you get a LOT in the system, the engine won't restart until you clean it out.

I have checked around the Throttle Body for leaks while the car is running and have not found anything.
I didn't even check around the Intake Gaskets as I bought the car in May of '13 and the previous owner had just had the Intake Gaskets changed. The issue started approximately February of this year. Like I say, the car runs fine during warm(er) weather. Drive time has been very limited for the last couple of months as it just aggravates when I can't figure out the problem.
I'll pressurize the system and see if there is any fall off.
Thanks for the suggestions!
