Default Dash lights

I have a 1999 Z34 that started out kept blowing the fuse for dash lights and tail lights. Previous owner had put a aftermarket stereo system in. I removed it and started checking everything. Traced it back to the headlight switch. Put a new headlight switch in and now the dash lights and taillights will not shut off unless you pull the switch or the fuse. It seems to trace back to the switch but I have put a couple of different switches in and end up with the same problem. Any ideas?

Default Dash lights

I have a 1999 M.C. Z34 it started blowing the dash light and taillight fuse. Previous owner had installed aftermarket stereo system. It was installed properly. But checking and researching the stereo pulls to much amperage and shorted out the headlight switch. Checked all the wiring everywhere and didn't find anything else. I put a new switch in and now the dash lights and taillights will not shut off unless I pull the switch or the fuse. Checked everything again and it comes back to the switch. Put another switch in and does the same thing. Not likely both switches are bad. Any IDEAS?

My initial thought is the wire that illuminates the radio buttons when the headlamps are on is actually being back fed from the replacement radio causing the taillight and dash lights to stay on. However you said when you remove the fuse (tail light fuse) it will go off, so that makes me think its something else. Attached is some lighting schematics for your vehicle for the headlamp switch and radio lighting in regards to when the parking lights/headlights are on at night.

Hey thanks for the help and wiring schematics. It's been on the back burner for a while. Kind of waiting for cooler temps. Here's a couple of things to think about! 1 the stereo/radio has been completely eliminated for now. 2 it has an aftermarket remote start system on it. Thinking about eliminating it for now. It's supposed to start cooling off in the next couple days. So hopefully I can get back after it. I will study the schematics, so I'll be up to start going back through everything. Thank you very much Bart S,

You're very welcome. Maybe it's the remote start system. I have installed a few and if I recall it does attach to the parking lights for confirmation when you use the remote start or added keyless entry it will flash the parking lights. Yeah it's been very hot here in Virginia as well.

Can you tell me is there a headlight relay and if so where would it be at? There's 3 under the kick panel driver's side.

I don't see there is a headlight relay, looks like the headlamp switch carries the current load.

Thumbs up Short

Finally, after hours of tracing wiring and scratching my melon and chatting with experts on here I found the PROBLEM. According to everything I researched and through all my chats this is what happens when you put an aftermarket stereo system in this 1999 Monte Carlo Z34 with this style of light switch. Stereo pulls to much amperage and eventually shorts ignition switch and possible melting these 2 wires together. The attached picture explains everything. I would like to thank everyone that had a hand in helping me with this. You'll never know how much appreciation from your help wiring diagrams and inputs. Thank you everyone Bart S.

WOW, yeah something was wired wrong that's for sure. Glad you found it before it caused a fire.
