Default Check Engine light and the Gas Cap

I've only had my car since February, and I've had this happen two times now.

My CHECK (engine) light came on, and I didn't know why. I DID check the gas cap (take off, put back on) but it didn't do anything. I was going to schedule an appt with my mechanic, and the light went off. Probably 5 days after the light came on. I chalked it up to the gas cap.

It happened again this week. It hasn't gone off yet. I think both times, I filled up on a Friday and then probably didn't drive the car all weekend (maybe moved it in the driveway but that's it), and then the light came on on a Monday.

Does this happen to anyone else? Is there a way to speed up the reset-process or whatever-you-want-to-call-it?

You can buy a code scanner and reset the light.

It's probably a problem with the EVAP system, which could be one of many things. Including a little charcoal canister that vents your gas tank.

I would still take it to get scanned. Most codes will be stored. A multitude of things can turn on the MIL.

ive had my MC since Nov and this has happened 3 or 4 times now.
check cap light comes on, tighten the cap and it goes off
then a day or so later the engine light came on
i bought a scanner checked it and it was code P0455: gas cap or evap issues
Bought a new GM cap and it still happened again after that.
to fix it, it says
With a p0455, the most common repair is to:
  • Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
  • Otherwise, replace the gas cap, and/or
  • Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses (you may hear a vacuum noise or smell fuel), repair if necessary
I'm starting to think i have a small leak or something
but your first plan of repair is to replace the cap. from my understanding they need replacing every so often.

A leak anywhere in the evap system will cause that code. FWIW, vent solenoids fail 3x more often than gas caps.
