your issue could be as simple as needing a new Torque Converter, which should be about $150 plus install

or...

4th gear is gone and is not uncommon either in these transmissions.

i do not think that it is electrical either, as in a solenoid going bad, that part is correct, it most likely would have thrown a code if it were electrical. but not always.

in all honesty, you need to shop around and call other places, those guys sound like douche bags and are likely not going to give you the type of service that $2400 deserves.

for $1600 you can get a zzp hd trans, ZZPerformance - 4T65E (HD) Transmission #ZZ-4T65EHDT , plus shipping and core plus install, and you are most likely still going to be cheaper than that shop.

and i would almost bet you, that that shop would buy a used/junk yard transmission for a few hundred bucks, swap it out and then charge you $3200 because "something else was wrong"

if you have ANY mechanical skills, you can install a transmission yourself over a weekend. if you are good with tools, you can do it in a day.
if you are really good with tools, you can do it in a few hours.
Very helpful - thank you. Thanks for addressing certain points that the shop had told me that I wasn't clear about. And I'll definitely take the advice of shopping around. The thing Im concerned about before I can even get that second opinion, is even driving the car right now, and I'm hoping you could reply about that if you get a second. I don't wanna do any undue damage. But I will need to drive about 30 minutes to any other potential place at about 40 to 50.

I sourced a used tranny for $600 delivered and can get a shop to put it in for $500 = $1100. So, if I can find out today about any concerns about driving it in its current condition, I can go tomorrow to another shop for a 2nd opinion.

Any issues like a much lower MPG when its not shifting? Thanks for the help

*The "whine" sound is like a lil bird under the hood. Pretty high pitch, and thats what the shop said it sounded like. Not sure if thats indicative of the TC, but thats the sound.

you should be fine driving in 3rd gear at 50mph, even 60mph for short periods.

when i bought my 02 SS, the 4th gear was out (same situation as you), i drove it a MONTH everyday until the dealer could get my car in to replace the transmission. luckily for me, it didnt cost me anything, but they bought the trans for $300 and had one of their tech's put it in. took them a week because they were idiots. if i had it all over to do again, i would have just taken a reduction in my purchase price and put in the trans myself.

basically, put the transmission lever in 3 and drive like you normally would. dont cruise at more than 2500-3000 rpms and you should be fine.

the whine you speak of does not sound like the torque converter whine i have heard. does your sound fluctuate with variations in RPM? is it more of a "chirping" than a whine? video of it????

you will get lower MPG at higher speeds, 55mph+, when driving in 3rd, however, if you are driving 45mph, you wont see much of a difference.

Thanks for letting me know about RPM's and speeds, etc. ~ I'll feel MUCH better about driving it again for another opinion.

It "whine" does fluctuate with RPM, or at least, it must as you can hear the sound "wind down" like when you turn the car off, and also when you come to a full stop. To be perfectly honest, it sounds like a car in the Jetsons cartoon, like when they would take off. A slightly high pitch, sputtery-chirp of a sound that again, does increase and decrease with RPM. Thats the best way I can describe it.

I REALLY appreciate your help and taking the time to be thorough because I'm far from any type of car expert.

if it make the sound at idle, an easy test to make sure it isnt a pully....

take the belt off and start the car, if it still makes the sound, its the engine or trans. if it doesnt, its one of the pulleys, water pump, alt, or a/c compressor.

my hunch is your alt.

side note: if your car is warm, dont run it without the belt for very long, i would do it when it is cooled off, like 30 mins after you shut it off, but not completely cold, as in like the next morning after sitting out all night.

shouldnt take more than 30 seconds to figure it out.
