Default Ac Compressor bearing

So my AC compressor bearing is shot and it makes an awful noise. However sometimes it will be completely quiet. I know a new compressor is very expensive and the bearing is only about $14.

I saw a few re-man compressors on ebay for about $75 and I've checked with a lot of local shops and they wont just replace the bearing.

I'm assuming I'll have to get the AC recharged as well? I want AC this summer so the bypass pulley isn't an option. What would be your recommendation?

Thanks for the help!

Sounds like metal rattling when the compressor isn't engaged?

Sound goes away when your turn the A/C on or the Defroster on?

That would be the AC clutch starting to go. A little WD-40 (avoid the belt) will most likely make it go away.

You could also use a puller and pull the clutch away a tiny bit and the noise should go away. Though I just used the WD-40 method.

I'll try the WD-40 this weekend when I get home from school. Thanks!

-yeah when I turn the defrost on the noise will go away but then if I give the car gas sometimes it will come back again without changing any defrost settings.

It might not be a PERMANENT fix, but it can give you time to save up money.

Both of my cars did it this winter, I did the WD-40 and I'm about 4 months without ever hearing it again.

I did it first with the Camaro since I care more about the Monte, and nothing seems harmed haha

Haha classic! So just spray around the pulley?

Spray around the pulley (where it spins) and the very center with the car running and the compressor engaged.

No problem! Remember a little goes a long way, you should see it basically get sucked in while you spray and then when you disengage the compressor the noise should be gone
