Default 85 Monte Carlo won't start

I have a 85 Monte Carlo 4.3 it won't start. I replaced the starter still won't start. I replaced the timing chain and all of the seals that goes with it and still won't start. I checked the distributor cap its good. I got fuel and spark but it won't start. It sounds like it wants to start it cranks but just won't turnover. I had it started for like 2 mins after I put the new timing belt on and it died but before it died it backfired really loud and there was smoke coming from the carburetor. Does anybody know what is going on? I need help I don't want to sell it. I just bought it a week ago. Please help me I am stomped. It has only 80,000 miles on it. Thank you

That could be that you don't have enough compression in the cylinders, but if it backfired that means a valve stayed open when it wasn't supposedtoo. Which could mean the timing chain is off timing. did you replace your head gaskets?, a bad head gasket would cause lose of compression.

Hi `Steve from the Buckeye State of Ohio, and welcome
to the MCF.
It is difficult to give you a solution to your problem by just your
written words, but it could be that your timing is `off.
Did you use a timing light, and dial it in after your install ?
If you have spark & fuel to your cylinders, and it did
fire for a few minutes. You may have to check your
install of your new timing chain to confirm that it was done correctly.
Be patience, and hopefull one of our expert member tech will
post their thoughts/solution to your problem.
Steve, wish you good luck on your problem.
