85 Monte Carlo dies out while driving
Hello all - I'm really new and don't know very much about my 85 Monte Carlo, except that I've been have problems with it lately. It's my father's car that he is letting me use while mine is in the shop (body work).
So, I've been experiencing the following:
1. Hard to start in the morning. I have to pump the gas 2 or 3 times to get the engine to turn over. Once it starts it will die out at least once or twice before I pull away.
2. As I drive about 35 - 40 mph car runs good as long as I don't need to brake. Once I brake, the car putt, putts until I reach the speed again. So everytime I brake I have problems excelerating. Especially if I'm going on an incline. I pray for green lights.
3. The car will intermittantly die out as I'm driving with speeds of 35 - 40. So far the car will startback up.
4. Check engine light will come on and stay onafter 20 - 30 minutes of driving.
5. And last, when I park and turn the engine off..it doesn't shut off. It putt putts for about a minute or two.
The carb was recently rebuilt.
I know it's a lot, but desperatley need help in finding the problem and fixing it myself.
Thanks everyone.

wow ok the dieseling *putt putt after key shut off* is usually timing way off, sounds like the rest is possibly either a vacuum leak or vacuum lines in the wrong place. id get a timing light and test that first then do a vacuum check. let us know

When was the last time the car had a good tune up
plugs, plug wires cap rotor ect....
Also what type of engine, v-6, v-8
I also agree with Chris
Look for a vac. leak, since the carb was rebuilt not that long ago.....
check the gasket at the base of the carb.
It seems like you have a vac leak because when you use your brakes is pulling to much vac from the engine....
How did the car run before the carb was rebuilt.

RE: 85 Monte Carlo dies out while driving
Thanks for the suggestions. We'll try them. I was thinking the "not shutting off" was due to type of gas?? I had another suggestion to add some 108 octane boosterinto the gas and filler up with some premium gas. What do you think? With these gas prices, I've been using regular unleaded, but if need be I will put in prem gas from now on.
Carb was rebuilt because it was leaking gas...before that it was running fine.
The engine is a V-8 305.

I agree, check for vacuum leaks with some starting fluid and listen to the rpms. also, throw a timing light on it and also see what the mixture you're running is and if she's getting stuck at a certain RPM
