Default 77 Monte Carlo Gear Display problem

I am looking at purchasing a 77 Monte Carlo for my son. Only problem that I have found is that the gear display does not work. I can count 4 for drive, one reverse, etc. Guy tells me that it is simply a cable that needs to be reconnected. I do not know. Is this possibly the problem? I just don't want to be looking at a transmission problem or something. But the shifting seems fine.
