Default 73 monte convert to SS???

hi,
i just bought 73 monte carlo (not an SS) and i am looking at taking the 350 4 barrel engine out along with the tranny. i am not sure if i should keep the rear end a ten bolt posi or change it to a 12 bolt posi? after i take the engine out i am looking at putting a LS5 or LS6 engine in. where can I find one of these engines? does anybody have any ideas for me on how to change the guts all to SS?
thanks
James

Welcome to the site. As for making it an SS being that there was not a 73 to 77 ss you would basically be making it custom so you can do whatever you want. I would say use the Chevelle of that era as a guide. Finding a motor shouldn't be too hard. I would check craigslist and local salvage yards. I love a classic muscle car with a modern engine. Good luck.

can you give me idea of some of the engine to transmission to diff. combos?
also i need the engine specs for the 454, the 350 and the 400.
P.S. is there any difference between a truck 454 and a car high performance 454? if there is, what do i have to change to make a truck 454 a high performance 454?
thanks
James

ls5/ls6 big blocks are probably going to be super expensive. the ls6 should be damn near impossible to find. there was never a monte officially built with the ls6 supposedly there was one in 70, but thats unconfirmed.
differences between the truck big block, and the high performance big blocks the truck bbc should have a taller deck height, and make no hp, and not as much tq. they most probably will have heads that are total garbage, and a very whimpy flat tappet cam. the hipo big blocks will have better heads. on the ls6 i believe theyre aluminum, aluminum intake, a holley carb, and the ls6 had the solid roller cam. the ls4 big block shouldnt be too hard to find, but not worth the money to rebuild when crates are so affordable, but if you do decide to go 454, and youre already rebuilding it would be a good time to stroke it, and go 496.
