Default 2003 SS stalling

I have a 2003 SS with the 3.8. The problem is I have to give it a little throttle when I start it. It will idle fine for a little while then it will stall. It runs fine, although it will have a jerking to it every great once in a while. I'm hoping it's only the fuel filter but wouldn't it seem short on fuel all the time with this? I know it's time for a fuel filter because it's got 109,000 miles on it and it seems to be the original because it can't break it lose. I've been spraying the connection with WD-40 so far no luck. Just wondering if anyone has any other ideas on what might be causing it to stall?

Try checking out your IAC valve.

Sometimes those go bad / stick and you have to blow it back open with the throttle while idling.

Does it choke out when it stalls, or does the rpms just gradually drop and the car stalls smoothly? Because I would start mine and the rpms would slowly drop then stall. It was the IAC.

Could possibly be an ignition coil too...

I would start with the fuel filter fisrt though. Sounds like you need one anyway!

I was thinking the IAC but that wouldn't cause the jerking would it. I'll get the fuel filter changed and see what happens.
Thanks for the replies.

I have a 2002 SS that started having the same kind of problems, but it became so bad the car would barely run. Likewise, my first thought was fuel filter. To make a very long story short, call your local Chevy dealer with your VIN and ask them if your car could have the catalytic converter problems that fall under the "special policy" provision. There were a large number of problems with the insulation coming loose inside and plugging the converter. GM extended the catalytic converter warranty to 120,000 miles for a specific number of vehicles. I could not believe it did not cost me a penny... I had just put the 100,000th mile on the car! It would have been an $800 repair. Hope this helps.

If it's your cat, then what you wanna do is get a downpipe + highflow cat from ZZPerformance. $200 to fix a lot on your car, and not still have that restrictive factory cat.

could be the fuel pressure regulator. i replaced mine because i was having problems with it starting, and when i would take my foot off the gas peddel to stop at a stop sign, it would want to kill on me for a second. so i replaced that and havent had a problem since.

Well if anyone is still reading this, Justin hit the nail on the head. It was the FPR and not the cat. I hate it when suggestions are to the extreme. I was hesitant to buy a fuel pressure regulator without knowing for sure but I did anyway. I changed it yesterday and the Monte is back in action.

im glad that i was able to help you out with your problem. i just wish someone could help me out with the one im having with my car, im thinking its the ignition switch. ive done countless hours of searching and i found that is a really big problem with the montes, impalas. but no one says what they do to fix it, but since ive now put my car away for the winter, im going to take it in and have a new ignition switch put in and ill post up if it solves my problem.
