Default 2002 LS differential

Hi, I read many threads in the past since they were very informative, but I had never posted my thread. Recently, the differential of my 2002 Monte Carlo LS died and I did not agree what the work shop explained me. So I would like to have some comments or opinions from this community.
My car has 120k miles. It has new transmission in Oct 2012 and put only 6k miles since then. Engine works great and no accident in the past.
When I was driving on highway, I started to hear loud mechanical noise, like dragging metal sheet, and engine started loosing power. I pulled the car on shoulder. Looked underneath the car, but did not see anything. Started the engine, put gear in and started to run, could not. I felt something is binding in the transmission. Had to tow 400 miles to bring the car the car shop.
They send the car to the transmission shop who install the new transmission. The inspected and found the diffential was mechanical damaged, pinions and theeth are sheered. They said the transmission warranty does not cover differential. They explained if one tire keep spinned different speed than other, like drift or spin in snow, it could cause. But it did not happen. I argued with them the damage could also cause of inproper installation/alignment of transmission, but they denied. Can anyone advice if the damage is related with the transmmision or not?
