Default fuel display unit

Mine was never accurate for this because the information it gets comes from the sending unit and the computer I think. I was one of the lucky ones that pulled the pump and repaired the sending unit for no cost and it only took about 1 1/2 hrs. start to finish. Does anyone know if the mileage & fuel in tank readings can be calibrated? mine never are accurate as far as gas mileage and fuel used. By the way last summer I went on a road trip from Wisconsin out west and put on 6,000 miles and I got 30-32mpg on the interstate calculated by gallons pumped into the tank & miles driven not what the display told me which was about 35mpg. I have the 3.8 motor and ran the air con 90% of the time. It's a great road trip car!

I had to do this myself on my 02 SS a few months back. Takes about 45mins to do. I bought just the fuel level sensor by itself online from Herko Automotive. Saved myself a lot of money. Generally they dont sell the sensor separately at most auto parts stores which just carry the entire unit and the Delphi OEM replacement unit runs around $250. For the sensor itself I paid $65 including shipping, it was also AC Delco brand. So try to find it online before buying the entire sending unit assembly.

USER TIP: For those of you that have the models with the trunk easy access cover, DISCONNECT THE FUEL LINE AT THE FUEL FILTER FIRST. It will relief the pressure on the fuel line and thus you wont have pressurized gas spewing into your trunk compartment when you disconnect it from the fuel pump assembly.

How funny I just got this done 2 days ago..I went 2 yrs by just using the trip meter. I got mine done for 350. Which ain't bad considering most places was over 450. Anyhow its nice to know how much fuel I have. But I know what your going thru. Atleast the low fuel sensor still works..or does yours

awesome thread!!!! AMAZING write up. I need to do mine next, i hate guessing how much gas i have!!!

Question, i had this item book marked now its gone. anyway. It was a replacement fuel pump and sender unit from like Milzy, or 3800pro, or zzp. one of the w-body/f-body sites. it was both parts together for around $170 ish. I cant remember/find it now...
Does anyone know what site it was from?

Or where to purchase a new pump/sender from?

thanks

For the person with the cooling fan problem..........did u check ur fuses in ur relay? If the fuse is good then check the connections to see if ur getting any voltage. ur fan is suppose to run but cut off at around 40-50 miles depending on the weather.

Default Cheep parts found:

Like everyone else I was having problems with my fuel gauge being inaccurate. I tried bending the contacts but it didn’t help, mine was really worn out. After a bunch of searching around I was able to find a cheap fuel level sender so I figure I would share.

Advance auto & Autozone only sell the entire sump for $225. The dealer will sell you just the sending unit but it’s about $200. You can get the factory ac delco replacement part from www.gmpartsdirect.com but that cost $100 dollars as well. BTW, if you ever need a factory replacement part the above website is the way to go. You get factory parts at half the cost of the dealership. I’ve dealt with them in the past and they are great.

Here is the AC Delco part number: SK1051
Here is the GM part number: 89060197
Type the AC Delco part number into ebay. There is a company on there called Global Automotive that makes and sells this fuel level sensor for $20. This should fit 2000 – 2005 monte carlos. I bought one for my 2000 SS and it works great! Keep in mind this is not an AC delco part but who cares. The factory sender doesn’t seem to hold up so well anyway. Here is there website if you rather purchase directly from them. https://globalautomotiveofmiami.com/Home_Page.html

There you go. Buy this part and follow the directions on the first page and you’ll have the fuel gauge fixed in about an hour. Only need some simple hand tools.

great info,

I have the same issue and I'm now relieved knowing that i don't have to buy the whole fuel pump to fix my issue.
