1997 Monte Carlo Z34 transmission trouble
Hello all:
I am new to the forum. I have a 1997 Monte Z34 with 103k miles on it. Its the wife's commuter car as she only drives 20 miles each day to and from work. Some of the time the transmission will not fully go into gear, I think. You can move the gear shift into all of the gears without trouble, but it doesn't actually go into gear. The engine RPM's will increase as you step on the gas, but it doesn't move the car. I have had the transmission fluid and filter replaced already. This problem is very hit and miss; including that turning off the car for 15 minutes or so and leaving it alone will"fix" it. All of the auto repair placed I have taken it to keep telling me to just put a new transmission in it, but they can't tell me what the actual problem is. A new trans. is about $2300 to $3000, which is about all the car is worth total. I'm hoping to find a real answer on here that can point me in the rightdirection.
Also I should mention that once the car is in gear, it shifts fine and operates normally without anyhard shifting or failing toup or down shift.
Any help anyone can offer would be just great so I can fixmy wife's favorite car. Thank you

RE: 1997 Monte Carlo Z34 transmission trouble
If you put it into gear and bring the engine RPMs up, does it want to slam into gear? I know these transmissions have a problem with the pressure control solenoid in them. Mine went at 38000 miles and caused the transmission to chew itself up inside. I had it rebuilt, cost me 1600 dollars out the door.

It has only slammed into gear by bringing the RPM's way up twice...usually after I took the car some where and got stuck there while it woul not go into gear.
Is the pressure control solenoid something I can replace myself? Or is it inside the transmission?
