Default Speedo is messing with me! :(

hey guys! couple days ago i brought my monte in for its 3k oil change. im almost at 90k now with my monte. Anyways, after bringing it there i left, no problems, went to my gfs house for the night, went out to dinner and as i pulled into the parking lot.. i look down at my speedo and its reading 55MPH while im clearly parked. I was like WTF?! figured id bring it up to the dealer the next day and have it fixed. (the car was acting as if 55MPH was 0MPH and was going up as i accelerated to 90MPH when i clearly wasnt speeding.)

Next day, bring it up to the dealership, park in the service drive, turn it off. explain the issue they go to take it to the back, car wont start. battery took a poo right there in the service drive. LUCKILY it was under warranty and i got another for free. Then the Speedo went back to 0MPH and was fine for now..

2 DAYS LATER.

Same thing happens again. but this time it was saying 35MPH was 0MPH. At this point im getting a little bothered by it. So i turned the car in the OFF position and then into the ON position (not starting it, just so the gages test themselves) and the speedo drops the 25. I continue this method, until it returns back to 0MPH. It has not done this weird speedo thingy since..

Im thinking the little linkage or something little is acting up, or maybe a fuse is starting to go bad. its ONLY the speedo.

Any ideas? Anyone else have this problem??

Thanks for reading!

Sounds like the stepper motor for the speedo is going bad. You either need to have the cluster replaced or take the cluster out and replace the stepper motor.

I agree with Maniac, had a similar but larger scale issue with mine about a year ago. 5 of my 6 gauges had gone crazy and could not be used. I swapped all 6 of my motors myself, it's not hard if you are good with a soldering iron or know someone who is. Plus it's a lot cheaper to just do the motors rather then get the cluster replaced.

If you look in the repair help section of the forum there is a great write up including what the part numbers for the replacement stepper motors are.

Unhook the neg. bat. cable and replace it. This has been shown to correct the problem.
Worth a try.
Good luck
