Default RPM gauge is way off

Hi all,
So I have no idea why, but my RPM gauge is way off. When I idle, the RPM gauge is below zero, and when I accelerate, the needle goes up at a normal rate but its just off. It doesn't go to where it normally would. The belt is spinning when the car runs and the car runs fine. I don't notice the car act weird or run funny. It runs good and everything works like normal.

Anyone know what would cause this?

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that would be the cluster itself. It can be rebuilt

Like Brent (JuniorCar) said it can be rebuilt, it's most likely the stepper motor which is a very common problem for the 6th gen Monte....

Default Thanks for such a quick response!

Thanks all!
What exactly is a stepper motor? The little motor in the gauge cluster that moves the needle on the gauge?

Yep, each needle has its own stepper motor. We have a how-to guide, actually recently talked about them too. But Im on mobile right now and can't link it easily

Default tach problems

My speedo was acting up and I read somewhere that if you remove the neg. battery cable and then replace it the stepper moter will return to normal operation. I tried it and it worked, no more erratic movement.
It's worth a try, cheap fix.
Good luck

By the way, the RPM gauge is commonly called a tachometer. Just my 2 cts.
