Help me, please!
My 2002 monte carlo has been giving me a headache since I purchased it.
I've fixed a head gasket, replaced every other gasket, and an entirely new exhaust system, and after about $1600 of work, I'm still having issues.
Currently, my electrical system is going haywire, and I've had it diagnosed as a bad BCM. Currently, when I start the car, nothing comes on. No Odometer, no Speedometer, Tachometer, or any of my instruments in the cluster. When the cluster does feel like coming on, The gas gauge won't work, the security light is on, the radio gets locked, and there's no chimes when the door is left open/keys in the ignition.
It's getting difficult to drive without a speedometer, and without an odometer to at least keep track of my miles for gas.
My question is 1) does this sound like a Body Control Module issue and 2) Do I really have to get raped by the dealer and shell out $275 for a new Body Control Module, $100 for programming? It's absolutely ridiculous since I could probably write the code on the BCM myself.

The BCM is not reprogramable! When it is programed it is set for The Car It Is Programed into. All the numbers have to match. If you get one from a junker it will only cause you more stress. If your BMC is bad then unfortunately getting a new one from the dealer is the only way to go!

As JC said, I know the BCM has to be programmed (I believe requires the GM Tech II scan tool). Not sure if a donor BCM can be re-programmed. I believe the parts stores sell replacement BCMs, but again, has to be flashed with a Tech II. And it's not in the most friendly spot on these cars.....
