Crutchfield recommends the following:

You must use the recommended Crutchfield integration adapter to retain the warning system chimes. Failure to do so may result in serious injury or death.

Not to mention I have actually heard of a few cases in newer cars where the people that replaced their head unit and didn't install the audible warning system interface was NOT able to SUE in an accident that they were in, due to negligence on their part.

I have also heard that certain insurance companies will not compensate if you compromise any of the factory security/safety settings if you are in an accident that requires an accident investigation report.

You may want to just spend the extra 99.99 and not take any chances. Especially in dangerous driving conditions.

Also, the traction active and traction off, in addition to other warnings on your message center will not be able to be heard.

Everything said above is true, however, When I did my install on my 2000 SS a couple weeks ago, I did not use the factory integration adaptor. When you do not use it, there are 4 wires than stay un-wired from the factory harness. So far, my stereo works perfect, I have no chimes (yay), but all my dash lights still work, and everything else seems just dandy.

I have to admit, halfway through the install I was wishing I had bought the adaptor. I actually had one wire hooked into power that shouldn't have been, and this would not let me even start my car, and the security light in my dash was flashing non-stop. But I just probed for the problem and voila! Fixed.

Usually any retailer who sells quality aftermarket radios (I'm not talking about Jensen radios at Walmart, people!) will have the adapters for sale as well. Crutchfield.com has them, your local stereo shop, etc.
