Default 95 to 98 Air Bag Compatibility

What I have is a 1998 Lumina LTZ, dark blue inside and out. That interior is just a sea of blue, and I wanted to break it up a bit by swapping a few things out and replacing them with black pieces.

During a recent salvage yard trip I found a 1995 Monte Carlo with black interior. I got the steering wheel complete with air bag, dash face, and centre console (with unbroken lid!).

My car has a "next generation air bag" sticker on the window. I'm not sure what exactly that means or what year this "next generation" started, but I'm wonder if it will be safe to install the 1995 air bag into a 1998 car.

That's a pain you have to take out the passenger air bag just to remove some dash panels

I'm not doing anything with the passenger side bag. All I'm wondering is whether I can safely swap a 1995 steering wheel (with air bag) into a 1998 car, or if something about the air bags changed in that three year span.

Hopefully it won't produce a code, or worse yet, spontaneously deploy.

My only thought is a 95 isn't an OBDII car while the 98 is, I don't know if that would make a difference or not.
