Yes they are. I ended up takin a cone filter and screwing it on the stock hose, and i had a toronado in it. That was when i wasnt that bright.

I got my intake from Option Racing. 30.00, free shipping

( the heatshield slips over the filter and has 3 screws to hold it to the base of the filter) im still gonna put the heatshield on to use as a splash guard to protect the filter and just as extra safety. but like i said this only cost me about 40 bucks and if your gonna buy the heatchield, i think youre going to have to buy a whole new kit which is gonnna run you about 40 bucks anyway. i emailed chromeintakes and asked if they sell just pieces to their itakes and they said id have to buy a whole kit and then the a-holes sent me a link trying to get me to buy it.
That looks great dude. I saw those couplers at autozone a little while ago for about $8. I'll try to make something like yours and get it behind the headlight.

I figured i would have to buy another kit from them just to get that heat shield, but $40 is about as cheap as i would find anyway, and it looks like it's of decent quality so I'll get that also.

and you know, thats with pretty much any stock intake. if you add a smooth intake pipe and a high flow filter vs. stock tubing (ribbed and such) with stock paper filter, youre gonna get better air flow regardless of temp. if its still flowing better youll see gains. but of course youll see much better gains with cooler temps.

you got the 3800 right?? i think you could basiclly make the exact same minus the break for the MAF sensor and it would work.

well heres what i did, just got it done about an hour ago. you can see i kept the pcm in the cut-off half of box. then i took out that tube in the stock air box and ran the pipe through the box. it looks like i still have the stock elbow there, but im just using it for 2 reasons. first, i needed it to put in the vac hose and the intake temp sensor cause the pipe i had had too big of holes so really there is a chrome pipe inside there. and second, im using it as a heatshield. man was that a B to get the chrome pipe inside there and to get the holes lined up!! but yeah, ran the pipe through the hole in the air box and right behind the headlight. this should be rather similar to the route youll need to go with your motor i think your stock air box is alot alike mine so hope this helps.
