Default Short Ram Intake question

I've been thinking about ways to increase gas mileage since putting rims on my car. What I wanted to buy was a Cold air intake. After looking at autozone and seeing the K&N system, I knew it was the one I wanted. The autozone employee told me to basically just use a K&N filter, and buying a cheaper sleeve, or pipe would be just as effective and alot cheaper.

I found one on ebay for about $70 which came with the K&N filter. The problem is that the sleeve is extremely short. I guess it's a short ram intake, not what I wanted.

Just wondering, what ways will putting this short ram intake on affect my vehicle? Is it just as good as a CAI, I won't be doing any type of racing at all. Just daily driving, with about a bi-weekly 60 mile highway trip. Or...should I get the CAI?

My car is a 2003 Monte SS, V6 3800 Series II.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I wouldn't even bother with the K&N kit, it's essentially also a HAI

You will want the CAI, look for the wizaired or zzp's intake.

Thanks alot, which one do you suggest? I see alot of people saying Wizaired is the best.

Also, if I put the short ram intake on there temporarily, will it hurt anything, ie. worse gas mileage, or negatively affect the engine?

yeah if your looking for gas milage, dont go with that one off ebay either. most people jsut use that ebay one as a starting point if thry are building a CAI, the gains from that one are very very minimal. but i did see a tiny itty bit of gain from it (in power)

I suggest either, ZZP's is very new, but just as good as the wizaired.

Same price, so get whichever you want

Instead of "short ram", I prefer the term "hot air intake". It won't hurt the engine, but you are kinda shooting yourself in the foot- less restriction, but way more heat.

If you don't want to spend the money for a CAI box, you could always extend your tubing into the fenderwell and just do the K&N cone in there. You'll have a little more restriction due to the extra bend and foot of piping, but you'll have cold air for a fraction of a CAI box.

You can make your own heat shield- I don't know of any place that sells just a CAI box heat shield though. All it is is sheet metal (or sheet plastic) bent or cut and screwed together to make a wall from the engine bay- and the better ones are lined with insulation which is also cheap.

that intake youre looking at on ebay has one. maybe not the same exact one youre looking at but look at "chromeintakes" they sell that short ram with either a K&N filter or a regular filter like the one i posted yesterday, and that one comes with a different kind of heat sheild that has screws to hold the sheild to the filter. if you get a little extention for the intake, you could have the filter end right before the back your headlight. that will give you some better flow and cooler air than just haveing an open filter under the hood.
heres a link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CF-95...Q5fAccessories
i dont know if this is of any interest to you but you can see the heatshield i was talking about. and it works pretty good if you extend it just a couple inches, and that heat shield works really good.
