no matter what you do or put on the 3800 it will have rasp and not sound "v8 good"
the best ive heard is a cammed turbo car with the cutout on the dp open. its loud but sounds mean and you can really hear the turbo spooling etc.
aside from that ill take a gen v sc car with 1.9 rockers, intercooled, 3.0 pulley, headers, stock mufflers. its quiet and you hear nothing but the insane wine from the sc.
bottom line IMO unless you have a turbo car keep the exhaust quiet because it will never sound good. at idle it will sound mean but as soon as you get to around 2,000rpm and up forget it (unless you have the turbo to turn the rasp into spool noise) because its nothing but rasp no matter what exhaust combination you run.

Nothing will ever sound like a V8 except a V8. But then again. A V8 does not sound like a V12<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>

Still not sure but my car is not as loud as i thought it would be wit the new 3 inch piping and headers.
The best sound I have found on any 3800 is Headers to no cat, a glasspack in place of the resonator and stock mufflers.
I go straight pipe. Great sound. I'm deleting the resonator and most likely the U-bend in my 04 SS SC. I don't have headers and I really don't think I need them.
I'd think if the goal was just to make it as loud as you could- you'd be better off just welding in an electric cutout at the front of the downpipe to bypass all of the exhaust system.
I along with MANY MANY others really like the sound of straight pipes. If you can’t handle the noise, get out of the men’s room. I love it loud. My 69 Chevelle was very loud. I loved it then too.
I'm all for doing straight pipe on a heavily built engine (in whatever type of car) where you have a legitimate concern about exhaust restriction- but for a basic bolt on monte carlo- you're not really adding any power, just making the car significantly louder.
I'll be honest- I cut the muffler off of my monte and welded in a glasspack when I was in high school (back when it had a 160hp 3100), but I realized after getting beaten by a few various stock exhaust cars (mustang, cadlillac, even a pickup truck) that it just wasn't as cool as I had originally thought- driving around in a screaming loud 16 second car.
Now that I'm a little older, and have my own house- it kinda irritates me when some of the neighbors are ripping through the neighborhood in their straight piped cars. We have a guy a couple houses down with a straight piped Escalade- that sure is irritating at 4AM when he's got it out there idling 10 minutes before work, and when he goes ripping down the street NASCAR style....
Your way off on the raspy sound. No rice here. I’ll stick with my straight pipes.
