I need to know this. I got a speeding ticket for 129 mph. I know this is a bull$#$- ticket. I just need to know the EXACT top speed for the 2002 Monte Carlo Ss ( with the speed limiter working)! If anyone can help me I would appreciate it!

 

Have you owned the car since new / has it ever been tuned? If not, how do you plan to prove its never been tuned since its so easy to change / remove the limiter?

I've never looked at the tables for a 6th gen, but the thread below seems to claim its 125 from the factory (with stock height wheels/tires):

I got the car from my parents who bought it new in 2002. They have never tuned it or done anything to it. I have also not had it tuned or tried to disable the limiter. I got it in 2016.

 

So you want to fight the speeding ticket with information about the PCM settings for speed limiting on the car? Ultimately, I think that will be a bit challenging for the court to accept unless you want to bring in experts to testify. I believe this because, if you look at the file I attached, it is a document from the shop manual talking about the fuel system. Notice, the fuel system cutoff does NOT go into details about the RPM or speed for the cut offs. My guess is because that GM may vary these settings in different PCMs for the same make/model/trim.

I opened up a BIN file I have for a 2002 Monte Carlo SS with a OSID of 12223448. Below are the values. This means as long as the RPM does not exceed 5950 and the speed does not exceed 124 MPH, the injectors will still fire. Once you pass one of those, the injectors stop. BUT.... If you look at the next screenshot (and ignore the word "supercharger" in the list of options), you will see at 100-105 miles it will begin to enrich the air/fuel mix and retard timing; all to prepare for cutting off the injectors. I did not screenshot the spark/rpm option, but that is set to 7000.

Now keep in mind, those are the numbers at which the PCM takes action. This does NOT mean the car cannot exceed that speed, just the PCM is not going to give you fuel to do it. Example, you hit 124mph, injectors stop, you are rolling down hill and have momentum, your speed will climb because the PCM does not order the EBCM to trigger the brakes (these cars do not work like that). And those values are based off sensor readings. If something causes the sensors to be off (say non-factory tire sizes), then you PCM results vs the cop's speed detection method will vary.

So back to how you plan to challenge the ticket, using this data probably won't help. Someone has to read it OR trust that some guy on some Internet forum was able to explain GM's system.... Or the other issue, 124mph is a max cut off, it we are talking 5mph. Now if you were using a tool that records vehicle speed based on GPS readings, that *might* help.

If you take this to court, I am curious what happens.

 

And I want to add, I am doubting an exact top speed is documented. THe best you can get is based on factory speed limiters. Another words if you de-activate the limiters, top speed can vary based on how much runway do you have and can you reach the absolute mechanical limitations.
Being honest, unmodified, I think you need a good chunk of runway to hit 129mph.

 

Providing the top speed is going to be irrelevant in court. Vehicle's have been modified since day one. Pressing a few buttons on a laptop will change the factory settings.

• You have a better chance challenging the accuracy of the radar gun and it's calibration. Just by the statement "I know it's a bull$?it tickets" sounds as if you know you were driving way to fast. Best to try making a plea with the prosecutor for a lesser offense. I'm not trying to bash you,

I completely agree, that's what I was getting at too. Claiming the stock top speed is X is pretty dicey when it can be easily changed to Y and back to X in minutes with no record of ever having been changed.
