Default Security

On my way home. The security light on the dash was on the whole time. No running problems with the car. Just the light was on and stayed on. Any insight to what this may be from?

95 Monte Carlo's are equipped with GM Passkey II. A wire runs from the computer up to the ignition switch and back to the computer (The 2 wires run into the steering column inside an orange shroud. The wire measures resistance from a resistor in the key. If you have a loose connector or if the resistor on the key is worn down... the computer cannot read the correct resistance .,The Chip in your key may be dirty or you might need a new one.

It is inevitable that it will not start at one point if you keep driving like this.

So. Little development of the issue. Let the car sit for a few days, starting it every morning i let it sit. The light eventually stopped coming on. Then i drove it a few days again, and now the light it on. Im not saying its not a loose wire or bad key. But could this intermittence be result of some sensor or computer going bad?

Try cleaning your key with rubbing alcohol, then do a security relearn:

Turn the key to the ON position and leave it there for 11 minutes.
Turn the key to the OFF position for 10 seconds.

Repeat the above 3 times, then start the car.
If you continue to have problems you'll need to have the system diagnosed to determine the cause of the malfunction.

I know this is a slightly older thread, but I stumbled on it as my security light came on yesterday. I did each step in the above post and my car started right away. The light stayed off all day while I ran errands and the car started right up. Thank you 03SSLE for those steps.
