Default security module

I have a 2000 m/c and occasionally when you go to start it,it won't do anything. the security light has been coming on sometimes too so I wonder if this is where the problem is,I went to the dealer and had a new key made but it did it again with the new key.can someone explain the security module and how it is supposed to work?does it have a timer on it because it seems to start right up after about 10 minutes.

Default RE: security module

There is a hall effect sensor located in the ignition cylinder lock, when the one in my 01 started to go bad the security light would come on sometimes when I was driving, replaced the cyclinder lock and retrained it to my new lock (there is a procedure to do this without the scan tool) and it worked fine. The lock is about $150 from the dealer. Best way to see if this is the problem is to hook it up to a Tech 2 scan tool to read the passlock voltage.
