Default Replacing a 8.2 10 bolt in a 1987 Help.

HI guys I am new to this forum and new to Monte Carlos well chevys in general.

So I have been looking at a 1987 monte for sale and it has what I believe is a 8.2 10 bolt in it. it is definitely a non posi car after seeing one tire bold and the rest have tread lol. I wanted to put a posi in it and after thinking about all the work and money that would take maybe I should just put a 8.5 10 bolt in it and have the extra strength. The car has a 350 in it now and if it ever gets tried I would like to rebuild it with a little more power.

So what rear end will bolt right up to this car and give me what I am looking for? Or is there a better option?

This question might be over asked on the forums but I have having a hard time finding the info I am looking for.
Hoping you guys can help me so I know if this car is worth buying seeing I want to change it right away.

Thanks.

I keep trying to put a pic of the rear end up but I cant get it to work. Guess I don't know how to insert one.

the rear end had upper control arms on it, nerve seen one with that before.

Welcome to the forum..
Since your new and we have a policy in place to prevent spammers from posting..
You have to be a member from either 5 days and or 10 posts before you can post pics sorry...

In answer to your question..
You have 3 options...
1) You could have some one weld up the spider gears.
2) you could change it over to a 12 bolt pig type
3) you could change it over to a 9" ford (also a pig type)

Or you could spend the cash and have some one install a Posi unit and or a mini spool since your 10 bolt has an inspection cover VS a 12 bolt or a 9" ford which is also a pig type.

Thanks for the quick reply.

What do I do about the control arms on the top of the rear end. All the 12 bolts I look at do not have them? Do I really need them?
Also if I weld the spider gear will that small rear end be able to handle the extra stress of going around corners and a 350 with some power to spin both tires?

sorry for the noob questions just trying to figure this all out and learn something at the same time.

Thanks

As far as changing the rear to a 12 bolt..
Youd have to replace all the suspension..
I would recommend using all the parts from the donor car..

As long as the welds hold up cornering is a non issue...

I don't believe having a 350 will tear it up..
Worse case scenario... The welds wont hold up.
