Exclamation Popping sounds when turning.

Ok so since iv had my monte there have been "clucking" or popping sounds when i turn. Now my father who also test drove the car when we were looking at it told me that this is common when fwd cars get older. Now i understand it's when there is play in axle/joint.

So My father placed this in his own words "Its nothing to be worried about"

Now some background on my father:
Started working for a used car dealership as a mechanic, Later Opened his own used car shop and single handedly bought, fixxed, and resold cars. This was 30 years ago.

My question is, is this an actuall issue and if it is what would be needed to be done to get it fixed?

It also could be the intermediate steering shaft that needs to be greased. Do a search For ISS and there are detailed instructions on how to do it. It isn't a safety issue, more of an annoyance.

Have you checked for the typically maintence things like tie rods, ball joints, a typically thing that has been said the ISS, and or the wheel bearings?

Mine was doing this as well for a short time. It ended up being a bad ball joint. Repaired it and no noise, i also replaced the bushings to the lower control arm while i was at it.. quick fix.. About 45 mins to an hour if you know what you're doing.

Should check the cv shafts as well. They usually sound fine unless you are turning then they will make a clicking/popping sound if the are going bad.

X2 on what Amy posted. The 6th gen Monte's (and many late model GM cars) are notorious for the ISS needing to be greased. I had the same problem on mine. Dealership did it for me without an appointment. They greased it up for me. I was in and out in 15 minutes.

I had the dealership do it because there was no write-up on here showing how to do it at the time. But if you have a little bit of mechanical skills, go for it yourself. I would also make it the first thing you do before you start getting into the more expensive stuff.
