Default 2006 Monte Carlo SS Popping noise/sensation when turning

Hello,

This is my 2nd post. I swear when I bought my SS, I was making a great decision. Well, the two weeks I have had it I keep finding more and more issues.

It only has 58500 miles on it now and wasn't making this certain noise/feeling when I purchased it. Of course it didn't make any noises. After buying it this thing has been a clunker.

When I turn the wheel left or right I get a slight popping noise and also can hear a quiet whining noise as well. Especially when I'm driving slow and pulling into a parking spot... Any ideas? Cheap or expensive fix?

Thank you!

Could be axles going bad, or the steering rack having issues (which I think have been recalled, you may want to research it). The whining noise, if it's while turning, is likely related to the power steering pump or the amount of fluid in it.

Thanks nitehawk. Any idea on cost of repair. I have a terrible extended warranty and I think it probably wont cover it. Its their "Premium" packaged Warranty, but only covers broken things completely. I already dumped 700 dollars into after paying 14000 on it with 57,850 miles on it...

Anybody else have any input?

Thanks!

Sounds like the rack and pinion. Very expensive, but a rebuilt part is pretty well priced.

And you would feel this in the steering wheel. And also hear a very faint whining noise when turning left right?

Sounds to me like the intermediate steering shaft (ISS).

I recorded the exact noise... Start at :23 and you can hear the thud. Again in the early :30's as well. Cant hear it great when the car was on and I live on busy street had to turn on the blinker which masked it as well

The ISS is not as big of an issue on a 7th gen as it is on the 6th gen. I've had my ISS changed twice and it wasn't the problem.

The rack and pinion was the problem and it has been replaced twice.

bumping this old thread for an update to "clicking" sound when turning.. its the starter. The lack of spring load on the gear allows it to bounce off the fly wheel.
