Please need help with service vehicle soon light appearing and disappearing

Just throwing something out there. Have you tried the gas cap? If the gas cap isn't sealing properly, it'll throw a SVS light at you. I was getting that in my 04 last fall. Put a new gas cap on, and haven't had the problem since.
It may or may not be your problem. But try the simple things first. Let us know if you solve the problem. I'm curious what it turns out to be.

It does throw a CEL. Good point about the SVS. In that case he does have to see a tech for that one.

You're forgetting I have a Canadian version. Canadian Monte's use stupid looking symbols instead of words written in plain english. Something to do with the french speaking province of Quebec. So I couldn't tell you if the undecipherable warning picture was an SVS code or a CEL code.
I just thought I'd throw the idea of the gas cap out there. Since it's known to cause a code, and it's a simple and easy repair.
The owner's manual says the SVS light will come on for engine problems. It also mentions the gas cap will throw a CEL.
I'm really interested in what the original poster finds is the problem.

What type of scanner do you need to read the Service Vehicle Soon light?
I see they've got some OBD II connectors for your laptop to run scans with your laptop. Know of any like that which will read the Service Vehicle Soon light?
Though the only OBD II connectors scanner for the laptop that I can find are coming out of China.

I had the same issue with my S-Charged 05 Monte. What it turned out to be the plastic heater core elbows right under the cone of the S-Charger where bad and I had one blow on the way out of town. They are easy to replace and it's a $7 part at Auto Zone. After we replaced both, the light has never came back. We even replaced the thermostat with one the opens at 185 besides the 195 digree one. My car has worked like a charm!

I just wanted to let you know that I've had the same problem for a few years now on mine. I've taken it to the dealer as well as other mechanics and they couldn't figure out how to reset or fix it. I now have a scan tool and guess what. There are no DTC's (Diagnostic Troubleshooting Codes) to clear and yet still a repeating SVS light. It appears the problem may be coming from the emissions system. The tool I have wont tell me exactly what the problem is but gives a yellow indicator light when I perform the emissions test. My car has always passed emissions but it could be a sensor somewhere that needs replaced.
