I have a 2002 Monte Carlo SS 3.8 with 28k miles. I checked the oil level and it was nearly a quart low. So I added until it was exactly on full mark. Then I checked it with Dip stick turned the opposite direction and it shows extremely over full. Which way do I need to insert the dip stick for the correct reading? The pic I included is looking at it from front of the car with the engine oil on dipstick facing passenger side which is where it's reading perfect on full mark. If I turn the dipstick where the engine oil is facing driver side it is extremely over full. Thanks
That's weird. Run the motor for a couple minutes. Shut it off, pull out the dipstick a little so the oil in the tube can settle. Wait about 10-15 minutes and check it again. Can you show pics of both sides?
Also, do you have any idea why it was a quart low? Got a leak?
So, the dip stick has little holes in the end to assist in a more accurate read (avoid reading the trails of oil from the dip tube). What are the holes indicating? Also, you usually get a best read on level ground after the car has been off for a few minutes.

I'll second that one. Especially if you second guess yourself and go back for a second or third reading as you've drug wet oil up the tube with thr first go.
