Default Need to legally correct mileage

Anyone know of the correct, proper route to take for legally having my mileage corrected. Long story short... About 2 years ago my lighting on speedo started going (72k miles), so I took out, in attempt to change bulbs. Well that turned unsuccessful because of the fact that they are soldered. So I bought a used cluster from local flea market ($50... why not?!). Used cluster was at roughly 160k. Now here's my issue. I finally got around to repairing original cluster. Ended up using a "glow gauge" overlay. BUT... before repair was done, I had to take an emissions test with mileage at 186k. Thus, the state believes the vehicle has 186k. Now, car has original cluster back in showing 72k again. What do I do from here? I definitely dont want to get pinched on odometer fraud, because in no way what so ever, was that my intention. But sadly, that's how it would look. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated in how to go about handling this up... Legally!!

This is one of those things where you need to talk to a lawyer and explain the situation. The thing is that each state is different and no matter what, your carfax will report it as "odometer discrepancy"

You also have to adjust the original odometer for what mileage it really has. To be honest, the best thing here would be to get a "0' marked odometer and have them mark it as "exceeds mechanical limits" or something like that.

You will need to check with your state, but I bet it's going to be a huge pain.
