So far, I think the best competitors are:
Ford Mustang~> RWD V8 Opt
Nissan Altima coupe ~> FWD ~>V6 only
Honda Accord coupe~> FWD V6 only
Honda Accord coupe~> FWD V6 only
I would've added the Mitsubishi Eclipse GT
(They have some super deals on them, they don't hold
their value like the 3 you listed)
I've seen a few 06-07 GT Eclipse's on AutoTrader with low
miles & Loaded for $14-$16K New they were $26-$30K : (
FWD only V6 Only : ( Lot's of Torque & Six Speed (They have some super deals on them, they don't hold
their value like the 3 you listed)

Personally I don't think the Mustang is direct competition to the Monte. Officially, the Stang is listed as a Sports/Muscle Car. The Monte is listed as a Luxury Coupe.
It is very tempting to think of it as a sports/sporty car with the V8 or the supercharged engines, and the connection to Nascar. But I think the reality is that it's in the same category as the Grand Prix and Impala.
Just because a car's name is used in Nascar doesn't make it a sports car. The Ford Fusion prooves that.
That's just my opinion though. Feel free to compare with what ever you like.

It is some what in the same category as the Impala and Grand Prix, but they aren't competition against the Monte Carlo. No one looking for a Monte Carlo would consider an Impala and vise versa. If you want a coupe, you look for coupes, if you want a sedan, you look at sedans. Plus I don't think GM is going to make a car that would be competing against itself. Each vehicle is directed at a different demographic of car buyer, and those aren't in the same one.
I understand the categorization of "muscle cars" and "luxury coupes," hence why the Monte Carlo has more creature comforts, but for bargain performance and available options/amenities if you put an '06 Mustang GT and an '06 Monte Carlo SS, I think you're looking at something you can compare. Mind you of course, key things on the Mustang make it the "muscle car/sports car" that it is. IE. RWD, 5 spd. vs. FWD 4 spd. AT. Looking past that though, the numbers and options can definitely be compared as competition to our cars.
One looking for straight up performance and to have more of a drivers car would look at a Mustang GT, while others looking for something that can warm their bottom, keep their hands on the wheel and turn the radio station, stay cool while their passenger cranks up the heat, and connect their MP3 player directly to their radio, but still be able to take many cars on the road would option for the Monte Carlo SS.
However if the Camaro was still around from 2004-2007 it would be the competitor and not our Montes.
That's just my opinion.

GM used to make competition for it's own cars all the time. Back when they used to take a car and re-badge it for the different divisions. For example, the Cavalier and Sunbird. They were both aimed at the same buyer.
Even better examples are Ford with the Tempo and Topaz. Same car, different badge. Chrysler originally had two cars both named Neon. Dodge Neon and the Plymouth Neon. Same car, different logo on the hood.
All were their own competition the way I see it. Maybe I'm wrong?
