Well, I was going to stay out of this, but...

Actually the UAW is a very good thing for the workers, and American workers out-produce the foriegn competion. So while it is true that a small percentage of UAW workers, (goof off, get drunk, and totally screw up), the majority are hard working people trying to make a good living for their families.

Now, GM and its management. Most salary employees work their tails off to make a little less than the hourly workers on the line. Those folks are the REAL HEROES of the company!!! Themanagement, and especially executive managementis too much a game of politics, Nepotism, and plain old "good-ole-boy networking",and MOST DO NOT deserve their job andthe OUTRAGEOUS salaries they make!!! There are, a few exception, who are extremely talented individuals who have a gift for making things work -- let's put these talented individuals in a class of 1% or less.

As far as the Strike... Hate to see it, but needed...
With all due respect, why is Toyota no. 1?
I think there are a couple of reasons, but the bottom-line is that theymake a superior product for the money. Many here weren't around for the Arab Oil Embargo of 1973, but itthen that the "Big Three" began creating their own problems. They owned the American market at the time, of course, and when people started demanding smaller, more fuel efficient cars, they responded with pure, unadulterated junk. The Japanese wisely saw this as an opportunity to enter the U.S. market with their higher quality, more fuel efficient vehicles.

In 1977, the U.S. automakers "cheapened" the quality of their cars significantly across the board - it was if they conspired to do so exactly at the same time. This was most evident in some of theupscale models, such as the Thunderbird, Riviera and Lincoln Mark series. The77's were horrible cars, and it was almost as if theAmerican manufacturersthought theyhad a monopoly on the market regardless of the quality of their vehicles - a take it or leave it attitude. Does anyone remember the Ford Fairmont, introduced in 1978? These cars were so light and flimsy, some of the early ones buckled when they were cinched down for transport! Enter the Japanese automakers, and the rest is history.

Great read, but in my humble opion, American cars died in 1973.

I was surprised to see that no member voted that GM should strike.
Thanks to all the member's that posted. It's great to read your
opinions/comments on this subject. I enjoyed.
GPD, I hope that it was just your gas cap : )
I'm also happy that GM settled, and can get back to work : )
Peace/Happiness 2 all,

You may be right, my friend. Thanks to a federal governmentsticking its nose where it didn't belong, 1973 was an interesting year for American automakers, as you obviously recall. Personally,I think doomsday came in 1977, so we're only 4-years apart. I'll agree that 1973 was indeed the beginning of the end.

Yeah, a 1976, 6.6, oops I mean440 ci Trans Am was probably the last decent car I drove in up the era of FI.

After that, the 6.0, oops, I mean 400 ci was born.

It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad considering that it was loaded down with smog emission crap.
