Yeah... I Think it was after 1955 when my family switched from Fords to Chevys.
The smallblock V-8 was easy to hotrod. Myself - I've always had Montes:
'70 Monte, 350 motor.
'76 Monte w/Factory 454 motor. Loaded.
'81 Monte w/buckets, 267 motor.
'85 Maroon SS Monte - Loaded.
Can't keep everything! Darn!

Nope, I don't come from an all-GM family, but my parents never had anything but American cars. Their cars were about equally divided between GM and Ford/Mercury products. A lot of my Dad's cars were provided by his employer since he worked in sales, so he didn't get to choose many of them. For some reason, he seemed to like Oldsmobiles (we had 3 Delta 88s and 1 "98"). We only had 3 Chevys when I was growing up (2 Impalas and 1 Citation).
When I bought my first car, I went for a Japanese brand (Toyota), mostly because of some problems my Dad had with his American cars and the general bad reputation that American cars had. Had another Toyota after that, then 2 Hondas. I had great luck with those cars, putting close to 190,000 miles on the last one, but with all the talk about slumping sales of American cars and American car companies losing market share, I started to feel guilty about only having bought Japanese cars and decided to try an American brand this time around. I'd narrowed it down to the V6 versions of the Ford Mustang (yeah, I know) and the Chevy Monte Carlo. The Monte seemed to give a bit more for the money than the Mustang, plus the insurance was cheaper, so I chose the Monte.

Born in '60 I've seen pics of my dad and his old wisconsin trooper harley that he rode prior to korea and then the '55 chevy he purchased upon his return. from there I recall a '65 or '66 chevy wagon with skylights? Chevy work trucks for my dad and mom had her nova's... my first (1975) was a '68 impala with a padded dash, diamond stitched interior and a 8" steering wheel powered by the 307 and a 2 speed trans. two years in and I moved on to a '70 Nova SS which flew like a bat out of ..... '80 I hit the Marines and the following thirty have been a blur but I survived and now I'm home again behind the wheel of a chevy beast and lovin it... Tim
