on a 83 you have tons of choices
you can change the intake, carb and cam
lifters, pulleys. yu name it
there are tons of mods for the older v-6
your motor is int eh car the right way LOL Ours is in there sideways
as far as the cheap things i would lookin to for that one is to rebuild the motor at least new gaskets so you dont find out that they blow ot after you add things on to the car.
btu you can bore it out etc....

but also look in to the edelbrock or holley kits they have you can get them in stages so that you have some choices to figure out what you want as a finished product.

thanks. i guessed intake, carb, and headers. but would new lifters and pullies add that much? and if i wanted to put timing gears on it, would i gain anything other than that "whine" sound? and would it even be worth it?

if you add a cam and li8fters to it and a taller push rod sure it would add some to it what they exazct numbers are i cant help ya on but figure out what cam you would liek and then you can go from there.

when building a motor figure out what range you want and where you would like it to go.
and also be honest about what you can affored.

figure out your cam and start to match every thing.

timem chain alone will not give you a real bad whine if one you could hear at all
most of the time you hear that they are running a gear drive and they are just a more reliabel way to get the motor in tune and time and they dont strech. But remeber if you break something and they lock up it will granaid the motor in most cases as they dont break like a timming chain will

I swear by them but if i break it most of the tiem there is not to much left to worry about reusing anyway LOL
