Default 72 SBC with 350hp?

Hi, I'm new to the site. Currently a Chevelle owner, but looking at a restored Monte Carlo. 1972, with a 350. I didn't get the code off the block, but the air cleaner sticker said it was a 350ci/350HP and the car/engine VIN's match. Was such an engine ever put in a 72 Monte? Looks like the 4 BBL 350 only produced 175HP. I'm not aware of modifications done but it was rebuilt. The car is an excellent restoration to stock. Any info would be great! Thank you.
Jay

Hi. Welcome to our web site.

Sure you could get a 350 sb in a first generation Monte. I'll bet the 307 was available too.

The tough one is a first gen with a big block under the hood and original.

Nice that you're in to Chevelles. I've had people mistake my '86 Monte for a Chevelle. How, I have no idea?

The most hp the 350 equipped montes ever produced was 300hp and that was in 1970. IIRC the most hp the 350 montes put out in 72 was a dismal 150-160hp but Im not 100% sure about that. My dad bought a 69 chevelle ss that the PO put a SBC 350 in. It was a 72 block and its a 175hp engine so possibly the montes had the 175hp version in 72 as well.

That’s pretty funny, rj. It’s a nice looking ’86. My first car was a ’78 Monte. Brown with a tan landau roof. 305ci. I only owned it 6 months and missed it for the next 10 years. It was a great looking car (my father had just finished painting it) but the engine had a knock and the floors were rotted. I’m waiting to hear from the owner of this ’72 I saw because it seems unlikely it’s a 350HP motor that’s in it…unless it was modified. I understand the 454’s are the most sought after Monte’s. I’m not opposed to owning one, that’s for sure!

Thanks a lot, Matt. Yeah, it appears the sticker on the air cleaner of this car is misleading. I think the max it has is 175hp, stock.
