Guys I know I could be wrong about this but SS is top of the line, not LTZ. Look at how the models are listed in dealer brochure.
(LS, 1LT, 2LT, 3LT, LTZ, SS)

From what I've seen & been told the 3LT could have the LTZ package that included the 3.9 and stand up rear spoiler.

Any model below the LTZ the lower panels are painted black. GM/Chevy considers black to be the cheaper version.

 

Rj the LTZ is top of the line. Look in brochure and most options on SS are standard on LTZ. SS is only the performance model NOT top of the line. And you are exactly right in that anything below LTZ has BLACK rockers not painted. And the rockers on LTZ are not the same as on SS.

Wow! What a debate!

I always thought the SS was the top of any line.

But Caine makes some points about the LTZ which is also the Z71 in the truck line.

The Z71 was always the top of the line truck, the SS was always the off-shoot Sports Version.

 

Exactly solaraslayer....same way with the Monte. Matter of fact almost all Chevy's the LTZ designation is top of the line.

 

Same with Caprices, in 91-96 it was Caprice, Caprice Classic, Caprice LTZ.
