`95 Monte Z34
Not sure if this was the place to post but here goes....found a `95 Monte Z34 down here, looks garage kept....1 scratch on the exterior, interior is immaculate...135 grand on the odometer...folks,this thing looks garage kept! Haven`t run it or driven it but talked to the owner. He bought it new. Clincher?Engine has rod knocks.Wants 1000 bucks. Wanna put a 3.8 liter in it. What`s gonna be the problem doing this???? I don`t want the 3.4 with all it`s quirks. Owned several 3.8 liters and they are great so is this feasable and if so,is it a different tranny as well? Hey,so I like sleepers! Thanks for any feedback on this.......
Dmanit! 3rd time post got erased before posting.... errr....
OK do not waist your time on the 95. it did not have OBD2 that means not only would you need to swap the motor, trany and engine harness, but the body harness aswell. (lots of work) the instrument cluster was diff then the later years. Your best bet is to get a 98-99 Z because either way to put a 3800 into a 5th gen monte you will need the engine cradel from a 98-99 Z. other issues with the 95 are that it had smaller front brakes then the later years, and that they all were drums in the back.
consider you'll spend 1000 for the car and then if your lucky 1000 for a donor car to get the motor trans harness and cradel. then comes the work to install it all. if your paying someone consider another 500-1000. that doesnt factor in the body harness swap.
once you ahve that... your still left with a Z with underpowered brakes... just look for a 98-99 Z and call it a day.
the DOHC is a good motor if you are clever and can fab up your own mods like i have done... but again it is not OBD2 so tuning is not possible. but if it has the issues that he is saying .... as nice as it is your buying an empty shell.... should be 500 no more.
fix the motor, add some mods and follow the gear swap directions on 60degreev6.com and you will have a very sweet daily driver... but swaping the motor will be a PITA. if you can find a motor from say a buick that had a 3800 in 95 you might have a better chance at retaining the interior stuff.... your best resource will be MOTORSWAP.org
