5th Gen ('95-'99): Z34 engine 96 m.c.

Z34 engine 96 m.c.
Our 96 MonteCarlo shut down while driving a couple of weeks ago. Driving about 55mph and the engine just shut off. Coasted about 1/4 mi. and parked. Turned starter a few secs. Sounded a little different while cranking but would not start. I suspect that the teeth in the cam-belt have stripped on the drive pulley? Not sure if it would be the timing chain. Vehicle has 140,000 miles. Would the valves be damaged?

Just an fyi, 95-99 Montes are 5th gens, not 6th gens. It doesn't seem like it's the timing belt but you should still inspect it anyways. To me it sounds like you have some kind of electrical problem. Good luck finding the issue. It's hard finding the problem when your car doesn't show many issues.

I pulled the front /upper cam- belt cover and cranked the engine a second. The belt did not move. The belt doesn't appear broken but there was some debris inside the cover that indicated separated teeth/ribs. I suspect the belt stripped on the drive pulley. Thanks RA
