Valve Cover/Oil Extension Neck Recall
GM has created pretty hateful and disappointed feelings in me with their approach to recall "fixes". They alter the key to repair a faulty ignition, change the name of the "injector shield" to "vanity cover" and esthetically destroy appearance under the hood, not to mention the new mismatched valve covers. So in the spirit of the way GM seems to think, the new police car steering issue may be handled by just taking off the tires and wheels... See!, no more steering issue and if the radiators are ever found to be defective, why not just disconnect the A/C, problem solved....no more overheating
GM, there is a limit to what customers will tolerate and my limit has been reached, not that I think GM cares one little bit.
Why should customer satisfaction matter, right?

GM, there is a limit to what customers will tolerate and my limit has been reached, not that I think GM cares one little bit. Honda's and Toyota's (and some others) have airbags that explode with shrapnel. People still don't buy Chrysler's because they think the transmission will crap out. Ford's used to SLIP FROM PARK TO REVERSE WITH NO WARNING!!!! If you're waiting for a car with no issues you should probably start riding a bicycle everywhere.
I'm not saying GM shouldn't be accountable but a seal that leaks after 14 years? Come on. The ignition thing, I can see a little more indignation there, but a freakin' valve cover seal? Cars leak all the time, this just happens to be a safety concern. Context matters so everyone that's so mad about this can probably tone down the rhetoric a little.

As for the ignition switch issues, that is a deeper issue. Our cars was a knee jerk reaction. There are gm cars that the ignition switch is being either replaced or repaired with an upgraded part to stop the failure. During this time, people with an unrelated ignition switch (which is the one in our montes) began reporting issues. Our switches are not really faulty, it's operator misuse with too much crap on the keys that either weighs down on it or gets caught by their knee while driving. Hence why gm is balancing the weight on you key and also instructing ppl not to put additional items on it (it's saving people from themselves).
Again there is a gm car with a truly bad ignition switch and that is being handled.
And as for the oil leak, I agree, gaskets and seLs age. Plastics and silicon materials do not last forever and honestly modern cars are lasting long then they used to and in some cases requiring less repairs. These cars are old and the engine quite common (and the valve covers and gasket parts go back at least to 93).
Admittedly I saw the different names about the engine cover between the recall and shop book. I think it's all in who writes the documents. But I do find it funny.

You pretty well summed up my thoughts on the ignition "issue." I'm glad you're kind of reaffirming my thoughts.
I also think it's funny they renamed the parts. In my job I work with a lot of people that write technical publications for engineering changes. They change names from week to week. GM's been through 14 years and bankruptcy that probably gutted the company of all their experience yet they're expected to keep naming convention the same. It makes me chuckle.

personally I think if ya just replaced the front valve cover gasket and replaced all those o rings in the filler neck it would be problem solved. Gm is notorious for leaky gaskets. look at the 4,3l man that engine leaks everywhere after it gets some miles on it.
Glad I stopped in today, never knew about this recall. I've been getting cards about the key thing, which I never had done (no issue in over 11 years) and I had my gaskets changed some time ago.
Will look into this more.
Thank forum.

I fell for the key thing, but as I had just had intake gaskets replaced, I have new valve cover gaskets. The recall has no limit so if I somehow get a leak in front valve cover I will get a free one I doubt I will. My next fix is oil pan gasket
