Transmission woes
So my 01 SS has 232,000 miles on it. The transmission needs rebuilding and the mechanic said it was a mess on the inside. The 4th gear splines were completely sheared which was common for that year but he found no other metal shavings throughout the entire system which was a good thing. The valve body on the other hand was completely worn out. He said he could try to rebuild it and I might get 25,000 miles on it or get a used one and hopefully get more miles on it. I told her why can't I just put a reman transmission in it and he said the ID tag would have to be a complete match or the PCM it might have to be reprogrammed. Is there any truth to this?
They're right about having to match up the code, but really it's not a huge deal. Production numbers were very high for these transmissions across the cars they went in and there are a range of years you can use - so finding something that matches up to what you've got wont be a needle in a haystack search.
I can't really complain considering how many miles are on the car.. I'm not sure how the two previous owners took care of it but the car looks immaculate on the interior and the body is in pretty good shape. I'm sure the transmission rebuild will last me my lifetime.
