Default transmission swap to a 700r4

I have an 84 monte carlo ss i recently purchased a 383 stroker from jasper and a 700r4 also from jasper. My question is the 84 was originally only a 3 speed so im gonna now need a shifter for a 4 speed... are there any that will fit in the center console without customization? or how did everyone else go about it? please respond with ideas this is the only thing holdin me back from havin it out on the road... thanks!

I pulled my shifter from the column, bought bucket seats from an SS and got a B&M shifter from summit and mounted it in the center console I picked up. just need to run the shifter cable to the tranny!

do you have to drill new holes to bolt up the b&m shifter or did it all line up.. and also did everything fit flush with the transmission tunnel or did you have to custom the center console too?

i believe all of these cars share a floor board so the car should lend its self to have an aftermarket shifter adapted. As I personally did not install mine I did how ever buy and install the center console which was perfectly lined up. Know the guy who put the shifter in, I can guarantee he did not see this far down the road. There must have been either, preexisting holes or a bolt pattern in the floor. I did not have to alter the console abit but, custom brackets in the front will most likely be needed.

If you do not already have your console I would hold off so you can insure to get the fit you want. The console's them selfs are very expensive to find as GM quit making them YEARS ago and are rough to find. but http://www.dixiemontecarlo.com/78-88...lo_catalog.htm sells some repoped parts (not cheap) and some used good condition parts.

Since I am not running a 700R4 i cant really tell you how it fits under the car but, my TH350 fits nicely, even with my full length headers and pypes performance 3" x-pipe with cut outs.

consoles are tough to come by. i have one im trying to get rid of though. the b&m and hurst shifters fit in the factory console. ive run the promatic2 with the factory console with no problem. holes had to be drilled in the floor though, and obviously a cable run. this was on a 79 monte though. no mods had to be done to fit the 700 only drive shaft length and crossmember work to fit the headers. you can buy crossmembers ready to rock for the g bodies now a days ready to rock.
