We have a T-350 tranny....going to do 700r4

What do we need?
1. Driveshaft either cut....or find shorter
2. Crossmember either movied up, new holes drilled...or another crossmember for 700r4

Will my speedo cable fit/work?
What about OD?....anything special needed done for that
(I know my column shift won't go down into 1st gear, but I dont really need it)

What else am I missing.....?

 

Have 4 different chevrolet cars 3 with the 700r4 and 1 with the 200 r4. I swapped in a 700r4 from a turbo 350 in a 1971 monte carlo. It is very expensive to change. Need a new cross member to match trans, trans mount, shorted driveshaft although maybe 2 inches 0r less, new ujoints, new shifter or not possibly headers could be in the way unless using stock manifolds, new Tv cable, new dipstick.The speedometer will be off so the correct gear must be installed. Also the governor must be tuned to have the correct speeds. Plus the manhours to do the work. The turbo 350 is lighter and more durable, robs less power from the engine than the 700 r4. If built to handle the power of the engine the turbo 350 is still a better, stronger trans. If it is to increase gas mileage the expense of the trans exchange there is no chance to make it up. I would search out a very competent trans builder and have the turbo 350 rebuilt. I did the exact change you are proposing and now regret it over 2000.00 later.
Any of these transmissions can be built to handle any HP and torque. The 700 is one option, others are 200r4 or the 4l60e( electronic 700r4) just to name a few. The above experience was mine. I have been turning a wrench on cars mostly chev and GMC for 38 years.

im in the middle of the swap now....I worked out a "deal" and got whole motor+tranny together, so its already less work than I had originally planned, which is great

I just wanted to see if their were any unknowns I hadnt accounted for

Only thing that I havnt heard about was....speedo being off/new gear and govenor tuned
Can anyone with 80s Monte confirm this?
